This mixture produces a very dark green colored sod. Tall Fescue, in the proper soil conditions, has the ability to grow roots to more than 36 inches deep which makes it ideal for areas of high traffic or limited irrigation. The Bluegrass in the mixture will form a strong root system with its rhizomes. This mixture is ideal for athletic fields, golf bunkers, and home lawns. It will tolerate slightly more shade than straight Kentucky Bluegrass.
Kentucky Bluegrass is grown as a blend of elite-type varieties which complement each other with beautiful dark green color, leaf uniformity, and superior disease resistance. Kentucky Bluegrass is grown as a blend of elite-type varieties which complement each other with beautiful dark green color, leaf uniformity, and superior disease resistance. Bluegrass is one of the only cool season grasses grown in the Northeast that has the ability to reproduce more grass plants by sending out rhizomes which are stems that grow horizontally underground. New grass plants grow from these rhizomes to fill in voids or damaged areas that may develop in your sodded area in the future due to divots or the grass being mechanically damaged. Bluegrass will thrive in open, sunny areas that have good airflow. It will tolerate partial shade if it receives early morning sunlight.

This mixture is very drought tolerant. It is ideal for shady areas and golf course rough areas. It is not tolerant to high traffic use. Fine Fescue is not recommended for home lawns if you prefer your lawn to have a manicured appearance or need to utilize your lawn for children’s play areas or sports play as both of these activities would cause high foot traffic. However, if you would prefer a lower maintenance lawn, Fine Fescue may be an acceptable alternative for you. It can be mowed and maintained at two to four inches of height, or it can be left to grow naturally without mowing to form seed heads that become a golden color.
